Despite a poor season in theaters, Disney has achieved a lot in the Star Wars games. With more than 52 million copies sold, the saga shows that it has a lot to offer.

The Star Wars franchise is one of the biggest brands out there. Initiated in literature and consolidated in the cinema, George Lucas created a cultural phenomenon in the 1970s that reached beyond the big screen. This is how the stories become dolls, t-shirts, keychains and everything you can imagine in terms of franchising, i.e. the release of the use of the brand for other products.

Nevertheless, the films have disappointed fans in recent years and consequently sales of licensed products have not grown as expected, despite heavy marketing. However, all that has changed with the arrival of new series like The Mandalorian and his beloved Baby Yoda.

At the same time, there is a segment of licensed products that has stood out strongly during the same period, namely the Star Wars games.

The Star Wars Games

The partnership between Electronic Arts and Lucasfilm has been an incredible success, so much so that EA released Star Wars game sales figures in a statement last Wednesday (3). Thus, more than 52 million copies were sold, which brought the company a turnover of 3 billion dollars.

We have created many amazing franchises. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Galaxy of Heroes, Battlefront, Jedi Fallen Order and most recently Squadrons,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts, when presenting the developer’s findings.

It was also confirmed that it was the microtransactions present in the games that made it possible to reach such meaningful figures. To give you an idea, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heros, a mobile RPG alone, has generated more than a billion dollars from these internal transactions.

Partnerships with new studios

Disney has already announced other partnerships alongside Electronic Arts, taking away the exclusivity the studio had. In this sense, the company cited some names such as Ubisoft and Bethesda. Nevertheless, the contract with EA will remain in place at least until 2023.

This shows that Lucasfilm Games will serve as the Star Wars brand manager in the gaming universe. In other words, it actually intends to explore this universe of possibilities.

“Lucasfilm’s gaming legacy is decades old. And with Lucasfilm and the galaxy far, far away entering an unprecedented period of creativity, the world of Lucasfilm Games is also being developed in collaboration with the best studios in the industry.”

– announced on the brand’s official website.

So we’re going to see a lot more Star Wars games, and possibly with a lot more quality. What is great!
