Top 6 Open World RPGs HomeGeneralThe 6 best Open World RPGs
Today we’re going to talk about the 6 best open world RPGs that truly offer a total immersion experience.
Creating an immersive environment in a new universe is one of the greatest goals of great work, be it in literature, in cinema, and especially in games. However, one of the game genres that does this best is open world RPGs, as they combine the gradual development through “upgrades” with the feeling of real power building by allowing them to revisit places with different skills. To make this list and not to repeat ourselves, we’ll only be picking one game per franchise.
The outer worlds
The game shares the same creators as Fallout which is a great thing. The bet here is not on the size of the map, but on the density of the elements. Plus, the freedom to interact with the world and the way it reacts to your actions is amazing! In the game we explore a space colony that can go very different ways, from fighting the big corporations that rule the place and the lives of the people there, or joining them to help them grow and rule many more territories .
The Outer Worlds isn’t as big a game as the others on this list, but it’s really effective and delivers an immersive and complex universe. Additionally, there are dozens of hours of content with the feeling of having experienced something incredible.
The game is available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
Today’s Assassin’s Creed franchise is an action RPG, but it wasn’t always that way. This change came with Assassin’s Creed Origins, but retains many of the features of its predecessors. Then they released Odyssey, which, while a good game, hardly looked like a franchise game. Eventually they released Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla to balance things out and bring out a truly extraordinary open world action RPG. The latter manages to convey the experience of struggle in 9th century England in a very haunting way.
Available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
One of the greatest classics of RPG games that spawns a legion of fans of the style and the culprit is raising the bar for open world gaming. The game has an incredibly wide map and hundreds of missions to complete. So it is common for many not to quit the game just to live between side missions, which is better than the other. In Skyrim you play the prophetic dragon blood whose mission is to save the world from dragons.
The game was released in 2011 and is still very much alive today, receiving multiple updates and the famous mods that keep improving the gaming experience. Skyrim is a must have for fans of the genre as it can teach a lot about storytelling and design to new games, despite some outdated combat mechanics.
Skyrim is available for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
Fallout: New Vegas
The entire Fallout franchise is amazing (with the exception of Fallout 76). The games offer the best there is in terms of a huge and immersive universe, but perhaps the most polished of them is spin off Fallout: New Vegas. This one developed the whole formula in Fallout 3 very well, but with the best scenario in the entire franchise. Full of life, with a lot of content, it still has an eye-catching and well-placed art direction that leads the player to live in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas and really get involved with the story presented there in order to determine the future of the property.
The game is of a good age, but it has lots of charm and content. It is also among the must-have games for anyone who says they are fans of the open world RPG genre.
Fallout: New Vegas is available for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
Certainly one of the toughest RPGs on this list, Dragon’s Dogma is based on a Manga franchise and even has an animated spin-off on Netflix. The game doesn’t have many world-building features of its own, but it’s a classic fantasy world, with heroes, villains, and beasts. Its execution is incredibly well done as it is an action RPG with a lot of customization options. In addition, you control several characters at the same time in really hectic battles.
Available for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
This game is already stamped on our lists and not for free. The Witcher 3 is certainly one of the best RPG games of all time and it reaches the highest level of immersion. It has a big and beautiful map with a lot of parallel missions, some of which are complex and time consuming and some of which are simpler but all well put together that always add to the main narrative. The game has been around for a while, but it stays very current, with impressive graphics and cutting-edge mechanics.
The Witcher 3 was released for PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
There are other great open world RPGs out there, but this is our list. So super famous classics are a must here, as well as little known games of immense quality, have fun!
